Below are some of our thoughts on Silvers and aging, health + wellness, and how Silver Age is positioned to help you make a difference.
Silver vs. Senior
The dynamics of aging continually evolve. Our experiences and perspectives shape how we think about our age (as we age), how we think of others, and how others think of us. The dynamics in aging adults grow increasingly complex with the expanded health and wellness needs, higher costs of care, connectivity, shifting family structures and ever-changing cultural considerations.
Over the past several decades, we’ve seen a heightened emphasis placed on youth, individualism and mobility – fracturing bonds that preserved intergenerational family structures. Not coincidentally, the value placed on age, experience, and wisdom has often been displaced by the readily available information at our fingertips with a few keystrokes.
How does this position Silvers in our society? While many are thriving in their later years, many are isolated and struggling to manage health conditions. Studies consistently reveal that perceptions of older adults by younger generations are increasingly negative. Economic data indicates that many retirees are financially unprepared for life after their primary careers – forcing them to adjust their lifestyles and frequently work longer for less. Yet as we age into the Silver years, we tend to be happier.
So how do organizations, brands and marketers navigate these dynamics to connect and have a positive impact on health and wellness? We believe the best place to start is to dig deep into the Silver segments. Establish a dimensionalized understanding of their unique needs, values, preferences, and health and wellness priorities. Master the category and competitors. Then plan accordingly. As aging adults are often grouped into a single demographic, it is imperative to explore the vastly different segments with diverse personas. Age alone within these audiences can span decades.
Keep in mind that they will invest in quality experiences and have little patience for inferior ones. They have time. Silvers have health and wellness priorities. They are loyal. They tell their friends about positive experiences (and the negative ones). Not investing the energy to engage them effectively may be ignoring the most substantial opportunity you never knew existed.
We also dislike the word senior and the negativity associated with it. We prefer Silver, at every Age.
Health + Wellness
In 1948, the World Health Organization established the definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The Global Wellness Institute describes wellness “as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.”
Collectively health and wellness can be characterized as “an optimal state pursued through actions that prioritize well-being.” Whether born of the necessity to manage disease, or the desire to preserve health, the pursuit incorporates all aspects of our lifestyle, environment, nutrition, activities, and therapies to achieve an optimal state.

Organizations ranging from governmental entities to the largest global corporations to pioneering start-ups are rapidly evolving healthcare models, approaches, products and services. Transformation is happening at unprecedented rates in categories spanning natural therapies, life sciences, medical education, smart technologies and the delivery of healthcare services – all capable of significantly improving health and wellness.
